Statement

Our relationship with the built environment is constantly evolving as architecture, now more than ever, has such a significant influence on people and their perception of a place. I am inspired by the opportunity to study architecture at MSA and be a part of this influence through exploring endless, creative possibilities. I am particularly interested in the architecture course due to the combination of practical, theoretical and creative thinking thus allowing development of skills in both conceptualization and the ability to practically apply ideas. The seamless integration of modern, innovative architecture with the historical, Victorian surroundings makes Manchester an appealing place to study.

A building which I recently visited was Casa Mila, designed by architect Antonio Gaudi. I was captivated by the innovation of the design and how the building integrates within the city of Barcelona whilst also expressing individuality and providing significant variation to its surroundings. As well as being inspired by the creativity of the façade, after researching the building, I was fascinated by the practical elements of the design. One of Gaudi’s most innovative ideas is the structural system of stone and iron pillars, eliminating the need for load-bearing walls allowing him to freely distribute the interior space. This design represents the boundless possibilities within architecture whilst exemplifying how creativity and functionality can go hand in hand.

One of my favourite pieces of architecture is the Newport Street Gallery designed by architects Caruso St John. This building provides a solution to harsh south light negatively impacting the paintings inside the gallery. Whilst creating a simplistic, quirky aesthetic, the triangular style roof lights primary function is to block of the harsh south light whilst the windows allow the north light to enter as the sun moves round, ultimately creating a softer, natural light inside the gallery. The Newport Street Gallery represents how all problems in architecture can be solved through critical thinking and often results in an original, unique design.

A work of architecture in which I would like to experience is the Seattle Public Library, designed by Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas. The geometric design and futuristic lines combined with the striking glass and steel structure has resulted in a captivating building which can only be described as a fortress. The structural systems of the building were designed to optimize the surrounding views and I am fascinated by how Koolhaas utilised materials and space to make a somewhat intimidating structure such an elegant and appealing piece of architecture. I am particularly inspired by the work of Koolhaas and his willingness to push the limits of what is possible within architecture.
